WINGED

First conceived as a part of a series relating to folklore creatures from subculture mythology, the painting,  Sinistra, pays homage to the Symbolist painting, Medusa, by Fernand Khnopff. This concept leads to a suite of paintings dedicated to winged deities. These new works are directed to incorporate the mythology of the ancient with the current human condition.

The style of Symbolism, important in history to the twenty years prior to and after the turn of the twentieth century, inspired the creation of Sinistra.

Symbolism dates to a time of uneasy economic, power, and psychological states as society transitioned toward the modernity of the 20th century. That period, known as the fin de siècle, has much in common with the prevalent spirit of uncertainty in the current nascent century and new millenium.
